The Countries of Northern Europe.
The countries of Northern Europe are thinly populated (Denmark excepted), but economically highly developed.
Finland (capital Helsinki), the so-called 'country of rocks, lakes and forests', is situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea. It exports large quantities of timber and paper. There are two countries on the Scandinavian Peninsula: Sweden and Norway. Sweden (capital Stockholm) is rich in timber and iron ore. Norway (capital Oslo) is known for its extensive use of 'white coal' (=water-power). It is a nation of seafarers and fisheries. Denmark (capital Copenhagen) occupies the Jutland Peninsula and the adjacent islands. It is a great cattle-breeding country. Iceland (capital Reykjavik) is situated on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. It is thinly populated. Fishing is the chief occupation of its inhabitants.
